Kultur Und Stress

Kultur & Stress investigates the confluence of netlabels and the nascent medium of user-generated community radio. Unlike any other form of radio so far, a user-generated radio is a social broadcast medium, where schedule and/or media library are directly controlled by a community of users. Somewhere between podcasts, streaming radio and netlabel releases is a vast gray area of unexplored possibilities for creators, DJs and developers, but the distribution flows are only partly understood, and the software tools are in beta development. Kultur & Stress challenges artists involved in avant-garde composition, experimental music, soundscape or musique concrète to submit their creative commons work for publication and broadcasting. The experience gained will hopefully result in exciting new content for community radios, new open source tools for publishing music in a social context, and new insights into media processes.

The Buddha Machine is a small musical loop player by chinese duo FM3. The name and idea derived from a popular Chinese music player similar to FM3′s player that intones repeating loops of Buddhist chanting. It continuously plays one of 9 ambient sound loops (drones) that range in length from 5 to 40 seconds. Just two years later this device has sold more than 50,000 units.
